This space is for children who explore what is familiar yet unknown. For the child who uses language in their own way, different from their parents or family. For the one who searches, despite the criticism, for a way to let their voice out.
When you open these books with your child, a world without borders will open up. A world where languages, culture and identity coexist, come together, and become uniquely their own.
You will find a boy who discovers the Mexico of his grandparents and cousins. A girl who finds a loophole in language to dance when they told her no. A clay comal born to embrace the fire. A mom who tells her son everything she loves about him and he responds with all his hormigas. Voices that hide behind teeth and find their way back.

About Luz de Luna
I am Martha Sidury, and Luz de Luna is the name I use to share these very personal and cultural stories. It's the pet name my father has called me since I was a little girl. Since everything was born from real experiences, from my father's love for me and mine for my son, it's a fitting name for this personal side of my work, kept apart from the academic one.
I was born in the mountains of Veracruz, the third of five siblings. As fate would have it, I moved to the United States, got married, and with an adventurous soul I traveled and came to know many countries, languages, and cultures while I devoted myself to my studies and my career.
I decided to become a mother at 40. When I made that decision, everything I had learned in my research about how young people with Mexican parents build their identities in the United States took on a new meaning. I wanted my son to feel that he belonged to both places, that he would never have to choose between his culture and his language, between here and there. I decided to raise him in Texas because that is where his worlds come together: close to Mexico, close to his family, close to everything he is. I don't know if I will succeed, but every day I work to make this world a better place for these children and for my son. These books are my granito de arena.
The books were born from a little bug that wouldn't leave me alone.
It started with a contest for a book fair. I wanted to write something for my son that would preserve our culture and tell him where his mom came from. I tried in many ways but never found the right one, and I gave up. Still, the desire to pass our culture on to him in writing stayed with me.
Some time later, when my son was about two and a half and devouring books, he asked me one night to read him every book in the house. Then to tell him the ones I knew by heart. And when I couldn't anymore, he asked me to make one up. I told him the one about the piñata. Then I made up the one about the catrina. Then the one about the little comal. And that is how, one by one, these stories were born. I started writing them down so he could hear them again and again, unchanged, because he already knew them a certain way and would correct me if I got something wrong.
These books are for him. And for all the children like him, who navigate a world that is wonderfully their own.
